ADDICTION PROFESSIONAL'S BLOG
All worldviews welcome!
QUESTIONS THAT NEED ATTENTION
1) Is our freedom of choice in jeopardy by the building of a one-worldview-fits-all profession?
I believe it is. I believe that if the following questions could be discussed in an open forum among people seeking the truth rather than power and preeminence, greater understanding could come to light. Here are the questions that were never properly addressed during the several years that I served as a member of the Counselor Certification Advisory Committee for the Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs:
1) Should people have the right to choose a counselor that shares their worldview of counseling?
2) Should future counselors have the right to choose a school offering the counselor education that supports their worldview?
3) Should counselors have the right to choose a certification organization that represents their worldview?
4) Just how important is worldview when it comes to substance abuse and addiction counseling?
5) Could government centralization of all certification organizations under the control of one oversight agency accomplish the preservation and protection of worldview freedoms?
6) Does TAP 21 offer serious guidelines to Faith-Based Counselors? Is there a need for Faith-Based Counselor guidelines to be included as an option for Faith-Based Counselors?
7) Will TAP 21 produce counselors that can change people's lives or will it filter out counselors who do not buy into its disease model and humanistic message as revealed through the literature in its bibliography?
8) Is one of the effects of TAP 21 to minimize Christian men and women of real faith in the professional arena and allow insurance funds to go only to disease model adherents?
9) Is addiction a disease or a spiritual bondage? Is it caused and perpetuated by sickness or is it caused and perpetuated by choice and the presence or absence of the overcoming power of God?
Though addiction often results in disease, is the cause and cure found in disease model theories, or in the power and healing found in the life principles of God not based in theories that disagree with one another but in truth as laid down by the creator of all mankind?
Your response to these questions from your worldview is invited. For the first time publicly, let's have open forum discussion to seek more complete understanding to questions that should be asked. Read more to respond

ANCIENT & ETERNAL WISDOM FOR OVERCOMING SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND ALL OTHER ADDICTIONS
Overcoming Self-Sufficiency
From 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 with commentary by Dr. Charles Stanley
In many modern cultures, self-sufficiency is prized. People cheer over stories of the man who "pulled himself up by his own boot straps." A lot of folks don't like to admit the need for help from other people or from the Lord, since a can-do attitude seems far more impressive. In a word, the problem is pride.
Adversity punches holes in pride. Paul reported that he had a lot of reasons to be arrogant—a good pedigree, education, religious fervor, etc. (Phil. 3:5-6). Even after his conversion, he had plenty of opportunity to get a swelled head. God had specifically called him to carry the gospel to the Gentiles. But the Lord also gave him a "thorn in the flesh"—an obstacle so great that Paul required constant spiritual assistance to work through it. This was the pin that burst the apostle's pride balloon and then kept it so full of holes that it couldn't re-inflate.
God uses adversity in much the same way in our lives. We find ourselves in a situation that is beyond our capacity to handle. So we try to pull those bootstraps, but nothing happens. That is when God offers His sufficiency, His might, and His guidance. Those who submit to Him discover renewed strength, as His power dwells within them.
Self-sufficiency is no prize; it is a trap. That's why God's message is the opposite of the one that the world trumpets so loudly. Those who desire to conquer adversity must sacrifice self-reliance to depend upon Him. When we are weak, His Spirit makes us strong.

WHY IS ALCOHOLISM AND DRUG ADDICTION NOT A DISEASE?
When we call alcoholism and drug addiction a disease this is what we do:
1. We deny personal responsibility for the destructive choices we made.
2. We hide behind a barrier of excuses for our own behaviors.
3. We fall back upon the myth of self-reliance as being powerful enough to get us out of the bondage we built for ourselves without realizing that self-reliance is what got us to where we are.
4. In pride and arrogance we fail to surrender our bondage to God who alone has the power to break the bondage and begin the recovery process by transforming us from the inside out.
5. We fail to enter into an intimate relationship with God who leads us into a path of recovery and spiritual growth through His inspired scriptures containing over 50,000 life principles and promises that guide us into complete recovery.
6. We turn to worldly programs of recovery devoid of the power of God and His Spirit and seek treatment through disease model human counseling that may lead to abstinence but leaves us internally unchanged with the same old inner influences and attitudes that got us into trouble in the first place.
